Reports from Haiti have indicated that the Al Mahdi Centre, in Port au
Prince, the city hardest hit during the earthquake, has been completely
destroyed. The centre which is located in the South Side of the City has a
school with 200 resident and non-resident children, a small masjid, library and
a farm (under worked). Seven Children have died. Currently, the staff
team consists of 11 people (the Principal, the Vice Principal, the Secretary,
six Teachers and two lady helpers who take care of the daily running of the
center). The houses of the founder, Brother Shu’ayb Brioche, along with
those of most of the community members have also been completely destroyed. As a
result, most of the Shia families are homeless and have been displaced.
There are about 20+ Shia families in the capital as well as in the town of
Leogane.
Brother Shu’ayb has been central in the functioning of the Al Mahdi Centre since
its launch in 2000 and has actively worked to provide shelter, food, clothing
and education to the children of Haiti under the care of the centre. He is now
heavily involved in the coordination of relief efforts liaising with various
Shia organizations.
A number of brothers and sisters mainly from North America are currently
volunteering to coordinate channeling of funds to Br. Shu’ayb which will then be
used to purchase food, water and the necessary requirements for the community
and the Centre.
Mo'mineen wishing to make any contributions/donations or who require
additional information about the crisis, can get in touch with the following
contacts who are involved in the coordination efforts from North America:

The following website has been created for the relief exercise and updates
will be posted there:

AIM earnestly requests the Mo’mineen to participate in assisting the
community in Haiti during these difficult times.
AIM has also been made aware of a special case of a young boy called
Hasan who sustained head injuries the week before. He requires a CT scan as
soon as possible, but has been unable to have one due to a lack of funds. Br.
Shu’ayb has requested that Hasan should remain under his care as opposed to sending him back to his home
until the necessary funds for the procedure are raised in order to determine the
full extent of his injuries.
An extended report on the Al Mahdi Centre along with its identified medium and
long term needs will be updated here shortly.
