Interview on CNN International's Your World Today, veteran journalist Seymour Hersh explains that the current violence in Lebanon is the result of an attempt by the Lebanese government to crack down on a militant Sunni group, Fatah al-Islam, that it formerly supported. Last March, Hersh reported that American policy in the Middle East had shifted to opposing Iran, Syria, and their Shia allies at any cost, even if it meant backing hardline Sunni jihadists. Jonathan Cook is a British journalist based in Nazareth, Israel. He has regularly published articles on the Middle East in international newspapers, English-language Arab publications and specialist magazines since 2001. This interview took place in Nazareth, Israel, on December 28th, 2006. Jonathan Cook is the author of the book entitled 'Blood and Religion: The Unmasking of the Jewish and Democratic State'. It concerns Israel's treatment of its Palestinian citizens during the second intifada, and the real reasons for the policies of territorial separation evident in the Gaza disengagement and the building of the West Bank wall. TV Debate: Over the summer of 2006, Southern Lebanon and Northern Israel became the world's latest war zone. Lebanon suffered by far the heaviest casualties, counting its dead in the hundreds with hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes and thousands of those homes destroyed. For more than a month, Israeli forces battled with Hezbollah fighters. But who asked Hezbollah to fight for Lebanon, and are they saviours as many in the Arab world believe, or terrorists, as labelled by the West. Ayatollah Hakim, leader of the Iraqi Shi'ites, was imprisoned for calling for an Islamic state. He managed to escape to Iran, where he was supported by the clerics. Hakim had pledged to fight any American military administration set up in post-war Iraq. And he had 15,000 well-trained soldiers ready to fight - the Badr Brigade.
