Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh talks to Democracy Now about his explosive new article in the New Yorker Magazine. Hersh reports that John Negroponte's decision to resign as National Intelligence Director was made in part because of the Bush administration's covert actions including the funding of radical Sunni groups - some with strong ideological ties to al-Qaeda - to counter Shiite groups backed by Iran. Hersh also reports the Pentagon has established a special planning group to plan a bombing attack on Iran and U.S. military and special-operations teams have already crossed the border into Iran in pursuit of Iranian operatives. The Message, produced in 1976, documents the life of the last Prophet of God, Muhammad (peace be upon him). To this day, it remains as one of the best to have been made on the life of the Prophet. The movie, to a large extent, recollects a common historical narrative of the life of the Holy Prophet according to the different Muslim sects, with few points of difference. It depicts the early animosity the Meccans held towards the Prophet and the various forms of persecution he, his family and supporters were subjected to during the Meccan period. A highlight of the movie is the scene that recounts the famous dialogue between the Christian King of Abysinnia and the head of the Prophet's envoy, Ja'far son of Abu Talib (a), who travelled along with fellow companions to seek refuge from the injustices of the Meccans by the order of the Prophet (s). One of the most famous sermons delivered in the history of Islam in which the grand daughter of the Holy Prophet (s) is brought to face the tyrant Caliph of the time, Yazid, as a captive and prisoner of war. Following the massacre of Imam Hussain (a), his family and companions at Karbala, Yazid went on to parade the family of the Holy Prophet (s) through the various Islamic cities culminating at the center of his power, Damascus. In these extremely hostile conditions, Lady Zaynab (a) delivered a most eloquent sermon with the courage and poise of her father and grandfather in which she spoke to Yazid with unwavering truth of his vile nature and the efforts of his ancestors that always aimed to extinguish the light of Islam since its dawn. She then magnificiently concludes - after having seen her own family massacred and mutilated - by establishing the blessed end that awaits the patient and virtuous ones. Comments (1) |
