Dr. Azmi Bishara delivers a lecture at Berkeley University where he discusses the radical change from a unipolar world to the mode of unilateralism and what this means in the context of international relations. He seeks to highlight this shift by drawing on methods and justifications used prior to the war on Iraq. Dr. Azmi also investigates the dawning reality of 'global terrorism' and how this has influenced this shift. He dedicates a large part of the talk however, to the Arab-Israeli conflict and the pivotal role that US foreign policy has in settling this age-long 'conflict'. Be first to comment this article |

In the past few months, as the situation in Iraq has deteriorated, the Bush Administration, in both its public diplomacy and its covert operations, has significantly shifted its Middle East strategy. The “redirection,” as some inside the White House have called the new strategy, has brought the United States closer to an open confrontation with Iran and, in parts of the region, propelled it into a widening sectarian conflict between Shiite and Sunni Muslims. To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has cooperated with Saudi Arabia’s government and clandestinely with Sunni extremist groups that espouse an extremist vision of Islam and are sympathetic to Al Qaeda. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Shias have gathered in the holy city of Najaf for a mass demonstration calling for US-led troops to leave Iraq. Up to one million people were expected in Najaf after an appeal by Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr, who branded US forces "your arch enemy" in a statement. He called Iraqis to Najaf to mark four years since US troops entered Baghdad and ended the rule of Saddam Hussein. The BBC's Jim Muir, in Baghdad, says the Americans regard the cleric and his militia as the biggest danger to Iraq today. Be first to comment this article |

The week ended Friday 30 March 2007 witnessed heated debate on DM Digital TV on whether the Iranian film "Imam Ali" should continue being screened or should be stopped outright as it was "offensive" to the Companions of the Prophet, all of whom are "Adil" without exception, as was alleged by the so-called ulama on the panel. The viewers could not have missed the scenario that developed through the phone calls (£1-50 per call!) and the self-righteous opinion of the "ulama" who had managed to unite the Deobandis, the Brailvis, the Sufis, the Salafis and the Wahhabis in defending the "adalat" and "sanctity" of all the Companions. The question arises, which Companions they sought to sanctify from the wrath of history and from the verdict of the Qur'an and the Sunnah? Comments (8) |

Around 8.4 million children around the world are enslaved today.
