Muslim fury as Israelis dig near Islamic shrine PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 February 2007
ImageThe Arab world reacted with fury yesterday when Israeli archaeologists began exploratory work near one of the most important shrines in Islam, the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. The digging was ordered by Israel to improve access to the Mughrabi Gate, the only entrance into the al-Aqsa compound, used by non-Muslim visitors and tourists. While the mosque compound is regarded as the third most important site in Islam, for Jews it is the most important shrine. This has made it a friction point between the two faiths for decades.

Sunday, 28 January 2007

ImagePESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - A suicide attacker detonated a bomb among police on guard near a Shiite Muslim mosque in this northwestern Pakistani city Saturday, killing at least 15 people and wounding more than 30, police said. The attack came as Pakistan's minority Shiites started to commemorate their most important religious festival, Ashoura, often a target of sectarian violence. Paramilitary forces in armored vehicles were deployed to patrol Peshawar after the bombing. The blast went off in a bazaar area about 200 yards from a mosque that was the starting point for the Shiite procession. It caused a power outage that left the city center in darkness, complicating rescue efforts.

Saturday, 20 January 2007
ImageWhat you are about to read is a story of a great man whose uprising has no like in the annals of history. A revolution with goals most sublime, a victory most profound and at its core a pronouncement of reform over conquest. The story of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet of Islam, and his ‘everlasting stand’... After years of unjust tyrannical rule, the exuberant torch of Islam had turned into a feint glimmer kept alight by a devoted few. The religion had become nothing more than a tool in the hands of despotic rulers who shared neither its supreme teachings nor elevating principles...

Course: A History of Shia Islam PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 21 January 2007
ImageIn December 2006 and January 2007, AIM organised a 5-week course that outlined some of the key phases in Islamic History both pre and post occultation. This course examines a critical juncture in the development of Shi’a Islam. The Shi’ite doctrine, accepted as a significant subset of the Islamic civilization, has since its early beginnings been subject to an array of misinterpretations. From being a de facto puritanical movement purely political to a group of enlightened anti-traditionalists, these errors in reading have largely stemmed from a fundamental misunderstanding of the principle of Divine Leadership or Imamah in the Shi’ite doctrine.
