Muslims across the world commemorate today the criminal attacks on the sacred shrine of Islam in Samarra. The shrine that houses the tombs of the direct descendants of the Holy Prophet of Islam - Imams of the Shi’a faith, Imam Ali Al-Hadi (a) and Imam Hasan Al-Askary (a) - was targeted by elements who held no regard for the sanctity of Islam and its symbols, but rather wished to destroy the fabric of the Islamic community by striking at one of its most esteem symbols. A year on, the shrine still crippled in its ruins, has become symbolic of the military occupation of Iraq that is debilitating its infant democracy. Be first to comment this article |

Iraqis took to the streets of Shi'ite towns and cities on Saturday to protest over the detention by US troops of the eldest son of Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, one of Iraq's most powerful Shi'ite leaders. There were no reports of violence. The US military said Ammar al-Hakim was held on Friday because members of his convoy were acting suspiciously at a border checkpoint while returning from Iran. SCIRI supporters held protests in Najaf, Kerbala, Basra, Kut and other towns in the mainly Shi'ite south of Iraq, witnesses and local media said. Ammar al-Hakim told reporters on Friday US troops said his passport had expired. He said the document was valid. The way I was arrested was disrespectful and not appropriate for a political and religious figure like me. They cuffed my hands and blindfolded my eyes. They raised their weapons against me" he said after his release.

Saudi Arabia is investing into Israel. Plans by Saudi Prince Al-Walid bin Talal to build an eight-story hotel in Tel Aviv together with the Abulafia family of Jaffa are in their early stages. But too much publicity could doom the project. Bin Talal - the world's eighth-wealthiest man and the wealthiest Arab, according to Forbes - is eyeing a beachfront property facing the Opera Building on Herbert Samuel Road to build a 150-room, Oriental-style hotel. Bin Talal's regular architect, London-based Basil al-Bayati, is said to be in charge of planning for the project. Be first to comment this article |

It has been a year, by the Muslim calendar, since an attack on one of the Shiites most sacred shrines here shattered this ancient mosque, ripping a hole to the heavens in its once glorious dome. Now, it is a hulking shell of its former self, gnarled and twisted metal snaking around the crumbling concrete structure. The blue and gold tiles that adorned the facade of the Al Askariya Shrine, covered with graceful Arabic script from the Koran, are in tatters, the broken pieces still on the ground in the empty courtyard.
