Egyptian spiritual leader Sheikh Hassan Shehata has been arrested upon arrival at Cairo International Airport, security officials said.

An Egyptian security official said that the Shia leader was arrested on Tuesday upon arriving in the country, Press TV's Beirut correspondent reported.

A source close to the Supreme Council of Ahl El-Bayt, a religious organization, also reported that 30 other individuals accompanying the Shia leader were also arrested.

Security officials declined to confirm the report.

The spiritual leader has been repeatedly arrested by Egyptian authorities for what they call his 'anti-government' Friday sermons.

He was also exiled from Egypt and has been forbidden from preaching in any Egyptian mosque.
