The security situation in Bahrain is escalating rapidly as more news of detentions, torture and abuse are spread among the people. In the past 24 hours at least 11 more people were arrested as the Al Khlaifa rulers continued their war against native Bahrainis. Last night a human rights activist was arrested at the airport upon his return from a holiday in the Iranian City of Mashhad with his daughters and old mother. Jaffar Al Hasabi, 40, is not known for any active political role inside the country. He is a political refugee in UK where he had resided for the past 15 years. His arrest came few days after the American Ambassador gave assurances that opposition to the regime should be conducted inside the country “not in Washington or London”. The Ambassador now stands accused of complicity in the arrest and ill-treatment of Bahrainis. |

The renowned Shiite cleric Sayyed Muhammad Baqir al-Nasser condemned the continuous campaign of interrogation calls against the Shiite population in the city of Khobar by the Saudi authorities that ban group prayers for the Shiite population in Khobar. “We will not accept any sectarian discrimination against us or derogation of any of our national rights", Sayyed al-Nasser said. Last month, Sayyed al-Nasser indicated that the Shia Muslims of the city insist on their rights of performing group prayers by stating: "God willing, we will pray in our sanctums and let the State bear the brunt of preventing our prayers." Last year, the authorities closed down four Shiite mosques in al-Khobar. They also consistently refused to grant the Shiites official licenses for constructing mosques without providing a clear justification for such denial. The Saudi Shiites constitute more than 15% of the country's population and live mostly in the oil-rich region. |

Online whistle-blower WikiLeaks has posted a huge encrypted file named "Insurance" to its website, sparking speculation that those behind the organization may be prepared to release more classified information if authorities interfere with them. Bloggers have noted that it's 20 times larger than the batch of 77,000 secret U.S. military documents about Afghanistan that WikiLeaks dumped onto the Web last month. Contributors to tech sites such as CNet have speculated that the file could be a way of threatening to disclose more information if WikiLeaks' staffers were detained or if the site was attacked, although the organization itself has kept mum. Editor-in-chief Julian Assange has expressed concern over his safety in the past, complaining of surveillance and telling interviewers that he's been warned away from visiting the United States. |

Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani stated on Thursday that Iran takes pride in supporting Hezbollah, the Mehr News Agency reported. Speaking in Iran's northern Mazandaran Province, Larijani said the U.S calls Iran a “terrorist” due to its support of Lebanon's Islamic resistance movement, but Iran is proud of backing Hezbollah. Terrorists are those who provide the Zionist regime with equipment to attack people in the region, he added. Larijani went on to say that the U.S. labels Iran as a “threat” for the Zionist regime due to “its suspected nuclear weapons”, and claims that Israel has the right to take any measures to confront Iran. The United States is not aware that if Israel dared to attack Iran, it wouldn’t wait for the U.S. permission, the Majlis speaker noted. |

Hamas political chief Khaled Meshaal says the Arab League's endorsement of direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians indicates the body's ineffective leadership. Describing the decision made by the Arab Peace Initiative committee as an attempt to mitigate the negativity of Arab political positions, Meshaal said on Friday that the Arab leaders were suffering from a lack of "leadership that can push their nations forward." "It seems that the embarrassment the Arab leaders are feeling at this time is greater. They do not want to show that they're shying away from their decisions, so they came up with a vague result, saying neither 'yes' nor 'no' to an immediate resumption of direct negotiations with Israel," Al-Jazeera quoted Meshaal as saying. He accused the AL of bowing to Western pressure and not considering Palestinian unity, describing some Arab policies as "conflicting." |

Dramatic increases in infant mortality, cancer and leukaemia in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, which was bombarded by US Marines in 2004, exceed those reported by survivors of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, according to a new study. Iraqi doctors in Fallujah have complained since 2005 of being overwhelmed by the number of babies with serious birth defects, ranging from a girl born with two heads to paralysis of the lower limbs. They said they were also seeing far more cancers than they did before the battle for Fallujah between US troops and insurgents. Their claims have been supported by a survey showing a four-fold increase in all cancers and a 12-fold increase in childhood cancer in under-14s. Infant mortality in the city is more than four times higher than in neighbouring Jordan and eight times higher than in Kuwait. |

Prominent Shia scholar in Australia and a leading community figure, Sheikh Mansour Leghaei, is set to be deported by 28th June on an unsubstantiated allegation by the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) that he poses a threat to national security. To date, neither Dr. Leghaei nor his legal team have ever been shown any evidence by ASIO to support its claims. A judge of the Federal Court of Australia observed that Dr. Leghaei’s right to procedural fairness had been reduced to ‘nothingness’ as a result. Worldwide figures have joined in support of the Sheikh, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Máiread Corrigan-Maguire. Show your support to Sheikh Mansour and his family by raising your voice against the unfair treatment by the Australian Government. |
