A bomber has detonated himself amid a crowd of Shia pilgrims near Baghdad,
killing 40 Iraqis and injuring 60, police and medical officials say.
The incident took place on Sunday at about 3 p.m. in the town of Iskandiriyah,
south of Baghdad, an interior ministry official said.
The bomber detonated his explosives among a crowd of pilgrims at a residential
building while on their way to the holy shrine city of Karbala for a Shia
festival, the official added.
At least 60 people were wounded in the blast, said Karim Al-Tamimi, a police
lieutenant from Babil province where Iskandiriyah is located.
The pilgrims were marching south toward Karbala to commemorate Arbaeen, the 40th
day following the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, one of two major
Shia figures buried in the holy city.
Earlier Sunday, pilgrims were attacked by grenades and small-arms fire in the
Baghdad neighborhood of Dora, leaving at least three people dead and 36 wounded.
