Unidentified assailants shot at the daughter of assassinated Shia cleric
Allama Ghulam Hussain Najafi in Kot Lakhpat on Saturday. She survived the
attack.
Later on Sunday, Shia leaders protested against the police and administration,
saying that the Liaqatabad police had not registered a terrorism case. The
police have registered a case.
Syed Irfan Naqvi, a member of Jamiatul Muntazir, alleged that unidentified
callers had been threatening Fatima Najafia (Ghulam Hussain Najafi’s daughter)
for the past couple of weeks. He alleged that the callers had threatened to kill
her if she testified in court against the murderers of her father.
He said Fatima Najafia was a witness, as she was with her father when he was
killed. He said that she had been injured in the attack. He said that on
Saturday morning unidentified men armed with Kalashnikovs opened indiscriminate
fire on Madrassa Sakina Bintul Hussain in Pindi Rajpootan, Kot Lakhpat, where
Fatima Najafia was the principal.
He said that the school's gate and cars parked outside and inside were damaged
in the attack. He said that Shia girls from all over Punjab lived and studied at
the school and that the administration had asked the police several
times to provide them with security, but they (the police) did not.
He said that after the attack the Liaqatabad police registered a case against
unidentified assailants under Sections 337/H2, 506 and 427 of the Pakistan Penal
Code (PPC). “However, even though the police collected AK-47 bullet shells from
the crime scene, they did not register a terrorism case,” he added.
Several Shia leaders under the platform of Hussaini Azadar Alliance (HAA)
protested against the attack and the police. They demanded the dismissal and
prosecution of the Liaqatabad police station house officer for being negligent
and for not providing security to the school after repeated requests.
Shia clerics also addressed a press conference at Jamiatul Muntazir, saying
terrorists were targeting the daughter of a renowned Shia cleric. They demanded
the government immediately provide the school with security.
The Liaqatabad police station duty officer said that the police had registered a
case in this regard. However, he said that a terrorism case would be registered
after the Model Town superintendent of police ordered them to do so.
