The Lebanese Army has raised its alert status over the past 24 hours due to
abnormal activity displayed by the Israeli Army along the border between the two
countries. Israeli warplanes had violated Lebanese airspace on Thursday and
Lebanese Army anti-aircraft units open fired on them. Israeli newspaper The
Jerusalem Post reported on Friday that the United Nations Interim Force in
Lebanon has reinforced peacekeeping forces along the border and had appealed to
Israel for calm.
Earlier on Thursday, the Lebanese Army opened fire on Israeli warplanes
violating South Lebanese airspace, the military said. "Lebanese anti-aircraft
units in the Tyre region fired at six Israeli military aircraft overflying the
South," it said in a statement. On October 25 Lebanese troops also fired at two
Israeli jets flying low over the South in the Marjayoun area. Such overflights
are a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which brought an end to
the 34-day war with Israel in July-August, 2006. The United Nations has called
on Israel to stop violating Lebanese airspace. It says such overflights
undermine the credibility of UN peacekeepers stationed in Southern Lebanon and
compromise efforts to stabilize the region.
