Russia's President Vladimir Putin has accused NATO of planning to replace the
United Nations, saying such moves would only lead to escalation.
"You get the impression that attempts are being made to set up an organization
that would substitute for the UN," Putin said on Saturday.
"I believe the potential for conflict would only increase," the Russian leader
added.
Relations between Russia and the alliance have been souring over NATO's plans to
recruit former Soviet republics, including Ukraine and Georgia.
Moscow considers NATO's move as an attempt to extend its domain to the Western
borders of Russia.
A NATO-backed US plan to station a missile defense system in Eastern Europe has
further chilled the already strained relations between Russia and the West.
