Sheikh Safdar Razi Faces Deportation PDF Print E-mail
Written by Eileen Fflynn and Patrick George

A former Austin imam whose interfaith work made him one of the most recognized Muslim leaders in Central Texas is being held at a Dallas detention facility and faces deportation to Pakistan, according to his attorney and family.

Imam Safdar Razi, who led the Northwest Austin Shiite mosque the Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association for six years, has been detained by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency since Wednesday, said Karen Pennington, an immigration lawyer in Dallas who is representing Razi.

Razi's wife, Safiya Razi, said her husband was taken into custody at their home in Plano on Wednesday morning.

Pennington said she is not sure why Razi was being held by the immigration agency, which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. While in detention, he was issued a notice to appear for removal proceedings, essentially a hearing for deportation, Pennington said.

Razi has lived in the United States since 2000, Pennington said, and moved his family here from Qatar.

He is seeking political asylum in the United States because his religious worker visa was turned down, Pennington said.

He hasn't lived in Pakistan since he was a child, she said.

Pennington said deportation to Pakistan would be disastrous because Razi, a known Shiite scholar, would be a target of violent extremists from that country's majority Sunni branch of Islam.

"Based on the situation in Pakistan, sending him there would be a death sentence," Pennington said. "Shiites are killed there with near impunity, and his interfaith work would almost certainly make him a target."

Officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not respond to phone and e-mail messages from the American-Statesman on Friday and Saturday.

"We are not illegals; we are seeking asylum," Safiya Razi said.

"It's hard," she said. "We don't know what's going on with our family."

Razi had been working in Dearborn, Mich., over the past year in a job he left Austin to take. But because of visa complications, he returned to Texas.

A couple of months ago, he and his family were taken in by members of the Institute of Islamic Learning in Metroplex, which is in Plano, said Asif Effendi, one of the mosque's directors.

Effendi said Razi called the mosque Thursday to request food because the detention center was serving pork, which Muslims avoid for religious reasons.

When members of the mosque tried to bring food, phone cards and money to Razi, a guard told them that there was no such prisoner, Effendi said.

On Friday morning, Razi called again.

"Please bring me something," Effendi said he asked in a tired voice. "Please bring me water. I haven't eaten in two days."

Effendi said Razi described the center as ice cold with 50 people in one room.

Effendi said the community is devastated by Razi's troubles, especially because Razi is known for his preaching of tolerance and respect among all faiths and because he had followed the necessary procedures to stay in the United States legally.

"We are perplexed" because Shiites who follow Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Iraq are supporting U.S. efforts there, Effendi said.

Sistani is a revered Muslim scholar whose influence over Shiites helped quell some of the violence after the U.S. invasion in 2003.

Razi, who, like many Shiites, follows the rulings of Sistani, is certified to interpret Islamic law and advise people on issues such as divorce and marriage.

Pennington said it makes no sense for the government to treat a representative of the ayatollah this way.

In Austin, officers of Razi's former mosque called an emergency meeting Friday night to brainstorm ways to help Razi, said Ali Akhtar, a member of the Ahlul Bayt Association.

"He's the prime example of the type of Muslim leader that we want here in the U.S.," Akhtar said.

"It's really just baffling to me why there would be such a hurry to get him out."

my God, what is wrong with these people? Not even giving him food or water? its behaviour like this which frustrates normal muslims and makes them more inclined to listen to the nonsense spouted by radical groups.

Is there a campaign for him similar to the one for the activists in Bahrain? if not, we need one!

this act is something that isnt correct for a human being not feeding him or giving the great scholar water for two days but wehave to look at that we are in a culture where a animal like a dog has more right that us the human being.this scholar that is well known in the american shia community is the most kind person that you can ever know and his intentions is to pomote the true teaching of the holy prophet muhammad (s.a.w.a)and his pure family (a.s) to people that have the ablity to go off and study so inshallah i pray to Allah for his safe return to his family and freind that love him salaam

Salaams,

The truth you tone seems aggressive not to mention your accusations. If the person's story is a bunch of lies then please tell me why so many community leaders are backing him and supporting the campaign to keep him in the country? It is the likes of you that would accuse a scholaristic figure and deem their work to be worthless because of a personal vendetta.

May Allah guide you!

Good! Islam is antithetical to our Bill of Rights and our Constitution.

Connie, if by antithetical to the Bill of Rights and Constitution, you mean Islam does not allow people to be starved for two days without food, and detained with 50 others in a room like animals in cages, then yes; Islam is most certainly antithetical to that. :)

it is truly unbelievable that any facility would withold food or water from anyone..what would be the motivation?? punishment?? this is an absurd story by an absurd man..it may be for the best that he takes his "inclusive" teaching back home to his birthplace since Islam has had 1,400 years to work it out..lol

Sheikh Safdar Razi had applied for Green card and in meanwhile he left for Pakistan which is illegal. Besides that although there are some shiite and sunni conflicts in Pakistan, we all know that "sending him there would be a death sentence" is a lie. I am really ashamed of such clerics in muslim communities.

He never claimed that sending him to Pakistan would put his life in trouble. This is what quarters of the media have said.

Get your facts right before you go around preaching!

Salaams,

Mohammad:
With all due respect get your information right please. Sheikh Safdar Razi has not been to Pakistan for many years now hence your statement that he left while in the process of attaining a green card is a dubious and twisted statement.

And if you think going to Pakistani is easy for clerics in US then ask Syed Fazil Moosavi why he has been living in US for the last 20 years? The fact is the day he goes back to Pakistan he would be killed in the same manner as Shaheed Arif. People love to talk alot but ignorance displays and clouds the reality.

How did this issue become a silly debate about Pakistani politics?? What about dear Sheikh Safdar Razi, what has happened to him since this report?? Or are we turning a blind eye on this as well, as we do about the terrible crimes in Iraq. All to make our masters America happy, we lick their boots and step all over each other!!! Some Islamic brotherhood! Shame on us all, may ALLAH (swt) help and guide us, may HE (swt) help and Guide dear Sheikh Safdar Razi, because we sure dont seem to be doing anything!!!

Salaam Alaykum my beloved helpers, may Allah the exalted bless you all, I clearly said to every one including the authorities, I am not afraid of death, if they send me and I am killed then I will be a martyr, I will go to paradise directly, and it will be a great honor for me, I totally trust in Allah the exalted, the only reason I am applying for asylum is that we are responsible in Islam to protect our selves the best we can, but at end of the day death can come even if I am here, I said it with all confidence, calmness and trust in Allah (SWT), we learn it from our beloved Imam Hussain (AS).
And as for the wrong comments about me, then I say what my beloved Infallibles (AS)used to say in respond to the accusations, "If what ever wrong said about me was true then may Allah (swt) forgive me, and if what ever said about me was false then may Allah (swt) forgive the one who said it" Amen.
Please keep me in your duas as you had always been, and if it was not for your duas and great support which I do not deserve I would have been in worse condition, but your duas became a cause of the support of Allah the exalted for me, alhamdolilah I was in excellent hands, the hands of our almighty and merciful.
Salaam Alaykum,

By the way if people tried to harm me, then I need to thank them because they actually did a great favor upon me, alhamdolilah Allah (swt) blessed great opportunity to serve my beloved 12th Imam (AJ) in the prison, what a unique opportunity, very few people get this type of blessed unique opportunity in the prison, to remove the misconceptions against Islam and Shiaism, giving daily one hour lecture about Islam from the prospective of Ahlul Bayt (AS) and more and more, Glory be to Almighty with His help I was able to prepare more than 100 lectures and finish my thesis of PHD, and more things, if I was outside I wouldn't have been able to do such in two months.(www.freesafdarrazi.com
Therefore rather than blaming the ones who told the government that I am threat to this country, I should be thanking them for benefiting Islam through all this.
I was and still am thanking Allah (swt) for this unique experience, yes it was emotionally painful being away from my family and my beloved ones, but sometimes the cure is in bitter medicine.
And you know in Africa the ego is less and people they would love to hear about Islam, and Alhamdolilah I will be serving my 12th Imam (AJ) there with your duas, and when they deport me from there I will go other places, and all around the world telling them that there is no god except Allah (swt), Mohammad (S)is His messenger, and Ali (AS) and his 9 descendants (AS) are the Godly appointed successors of the Prophet Mohammad (S). All that is with the will of Allah (swt) and his command.
Always remember the story of Prophet KHIDHR (AS)and Prophet Mosa (AS), they look bad but if we trust in Allah (swt) they come out good.
Salaam Alaykum
