Hassan Juma'a, President of the Iraqi Oil Workers Union will be speaking with
Ibrahim Mousawi, editor of a journal linked to Lebanon's Hezbollah for their
only meeting in London. This is a chance to hear what is really going on in the
Middle East today. Meetings will take place in the following cities:
London , 28 February
Bristol , 29 February
Birmingham , 1 March
Manchester , 1 March
Cambridge , 2 March
Norwich , 2 March
Cardiff , 3 March
Liverpool , 4 March
Hassan Juma'a, President of the Iraqi Oil Workers Federation and Ibrahim
Moussawi, Editor of the journal Al-Intiqad in Lebanon, linked to Hezbollah, will
be joined by activists and authors on a tour of the UK.
This meeting is a chance to hear key figures from the Middle East and leading
activists and writers from Britain discuss the impact of the War on Terror and
the continuing campaign to get the troops out. Five years after the invasion of
Iraq the world has become a much more dangerous place. As many as one million
people have been killed during the occupation of Iraq. The country’s
infrastructure is in shreds. Gordon Brown has promised British withdrawals, but
there are still 5,000 British soldiers in Iraq. The only reason they are staying
there is to give political cover to George Bush’s continuing occupation.
Despite talk of change, Brown is Bush’s key partner in NATO’s war in
Afghanistan. That hidden war is fast becoming a disaster. Thousands have died in
US bombing raids and the International Red Cross report a desperate humanitarian
crisis there. Life expectancy in Afghanistan is now down to
44 and health care is almost non-existent. The response from Washington is to
send in thousands more marines to step up the attacks.
The War on Terror has only increased the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Israel, the US’s chief ally in the Middle East, has been allowed to blockade and
bombard the Palestinian enclaves at will. Meanwhile the threats against Iran
continue. The War on Terror is spreading instability from East Africa to
Pakistan. Come and hear the debate.
Hassan Juma'a is the leader of the Iraqi Oil Workers Union and has campaigned
against the privatisation of sections of the Iraqi Oil industry. They recently
struck to demand that Iraqi oil stay in the hands of the people and remain a
nationalised industry.
Ibrahim Moussawi is the editor of the Hezbollah newspaper, Al Intiqad. He is
based in Lebanon.
