Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council has said the US acts in
Iraq ever since the 2003 invasion have only spread terrorism.
"Terrorism and occupation are intertwined. And Iraq today has turned into a
scene where these two fundamental problems are combined," Ali Larijani told
state television late Sunday.
He added that the US has no other option but to delegate the administration of
Iraqi affairs to its democratic government.
Reviewing ways and means of restoring tranquility in Iraq, Larijani recalled,
was the focal point of three rounds of talks between Iran and the US.
"Establishment of a sustainable Iraqi government will be in favor of all
regional countries," he observed.
Pointing to the Monday session of the International Atomic Energy Agency 's
Board of Governors, the top Iranian nuclear negotiator expressed hope that the
council members would not deviate from the logical path created with the
assistance of IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei and the EU Foreign Policy
Chief Javier Solana.
He gave assurances that Iran, as an Islamic country, will stand by its
commitments.
Asked about reasons behind the US opposition to the settlement of Iran's
peaceful nuclear case by the IAEA, Larijani said, "By violating the rules of the
game, the US ruined its own prestige. Adopting a similar approach toward other
regional developments has led to the US isolation."
The US has adopted a political approach towards Iran's nuclear activities, he
said, adding that Washington thought it could use the case as a pretext to exert
pressure on Tehran.
Saying that Iran should move patiently, the SNSC secretary however insisted the
country will have to stand up against extremism. "If the US behaves properly, it
will receive a proper response from Iran," he stated.
Larijani said the US has politicized Iran's nuclear case in pursuit of its own
achievements, adding, "Whenever Iran raises a new initiative to resolve an
impasse, the US claims that Tehran is buying time."
"We have announced that suspension (of uranium enrichment) has been removed from
Iran's nuclear literature. So, the idea of procrastination makes no sense," he
argued.
