There are many ways in which poverty affects people’s quality of life. One of these is the ability to keep warm. The recent hike in oil and gas prices has seen a sharp increase in what is termed fuel poverty in the UK. The consumer
group Energywatch estimates that about 4.4 million are now affected by fuel
poverty, amounting to one in six people in Britain. The eradication of fuel poverty and poverty as a whole is only possible through ending the domination of society by the transnational corporations, including the energy companies. The economy must be organised not for the profit of a few but to meet the needs of all. Be first to comment this article |

Religious leaders are commonly expected to utter calculated words of wisdom and play an active role in reducing conflict and bringing cohesion to society. Their many roles tend to include the preaching of tolerance, respect and humility, especially in relation to other faiths. But this does not appear to have been the case for the Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael James Nazir-Ali. And the irony is that his particular academic interests include the comparative philosophy of religion. There are people who stand on guard to induce Muslim leaders to condemn their fellow Muslims whenever they could be inciting hatred, but when it comes to correcting people of any other faith, the righteousness of these guardians falls worryingly short. The US, UK and other western nations are ignoring flawed or rigged elections in some countries for the sake of political convenience, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said today in its annual round-up of rights abuses around the world. While publicly espousing the cause of democracy, Washington, London and others were happy to deal closely with "despots masquerading as democrats", the group said. But HRW's primary target this year was what it views as the hypocrisy of western nations condemning democratic violations only when expedient. The report castigated the UK for its policy of allowing terrorism suspects to be transferred to the care of brutal regimes on receipt of what the group termed "empty promises of humane treatment". At least 72 have been killed in separate bomb attacks on popular pet markets in Baghdad, the deadliest bombings in Iraq since the US troops surge in the spring. A female suicide bomber killed up to 45 people and wounded 78 at the central al-Ghazl pet market at about 10.20am. A second bomb exploded 20 minutes later at a bird market in the southern part of the capital, killing at least 27 people and wounding 67, Reuters news agency said. Many teenage boys were among the killed and wounded, said police and hospital officials. It was the deadliest explosion in the capital since an April 18 car bombing left 116 people dead and wounded 145 in central Baghdad. Comments (1) |

An Israeli report on the 2006 Lebanon war is a victory for both the Lebanese Army and for Hizbullah, Lebanon's army chief said in comments published Thursday. "We did not expect an official Israeli body to publicly condemn its government and army," Lebanese Armed Forces commander General Michel Suleiman, who is tipped to become president, told As-Safir newspaper. Human rights group Amnesty International yesterday slammed the Winograd Report, saying the investigation failed to condemn what it called “Israeli war crimes” during the July War on Lebanon two summers ago. Hizbullah supporters in the South staged parades Wednesday to celebrate the report's findings. Chanting slogans against Israel, demonstrators waved Hizbullah flags and held up pictures of Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. Be first to comment this article |
