British papers caution Government on Terror legislationBritish papers caution Government on Terror legislation British newspapers have pleaded with the British government not to rush through anti-terror legislation in the wake of the three failed terrorist attacks in recent days. Police have so far detained five people in connection with the discovery Friday of two Mercedes cars laden with gas canisters and nails in London's entertainment district and the blazing jeep that rammed into Glasgow airport's main terminal Saturday. It said the government's response to the bombers should be proportionate to the threat faced, not to the public outrage.

Europeans view US as greatest threat to peace Europeans consistently regard the US as the biggest threat to world stability, a new poll reveals on Monday. A survey carried out in June by Harris Research for the Financial Times shows that 32 per cent of respondents in five European countries regard the US as a bigger threat than any other state. In the US itself, North Korea and Iran are seen as the biggest risks. London Mayor criticizes ties with Saudi Arabia PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 01 July 2007
London Mayor criticises ties with Saudi Arabia London Mayor Ken Livingstone called on Britons yesterday not to demonise Muslims after a double car bomb plot was foiled in the capital, amid fears of a Islamist terror threat. At the same time he criticised Britain over its ties with Saudi Arabia, which he said had fuelled intolerance in the past through its Wahhabist form of Islam, creating a major problem. "In this city, Muslims are more likely to be law-abiding than non-Muslims and less likely to support the use of violence to achieve political ends than non-Muslims," he told BBC Radio. "They have played a good and active and growing role in creating a multi-cultural society," he added.

US Congress to curb Bush enthusiasm for Abbas PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 June 2007
US Congress to curb Bush enthusiasm for Abbas No sooner had Bush, along with Israel and the European Union, pledged to resume the flow of hundreds of millions of dollars in financial aid to the beleaguered PA, than neo-conservative commentators and some Congressmen criticised Washington's public support of Fatah's "moderate" Palestinian government and demanded that rigid conditions be placed on any aid sent to the Palestinian territories. "The administration should condition aid to the Abbas government on his promoting reform," wrote Republican Congressman Eric Cantor in an op-ed in the National Review Online. "Fatah must offer Palestinians something better than the engine of corruption and anti-Israel vitriol it has always been."

Thursday, 28 June 2007
White House is subpoenaed on Wiretapping The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday issued subpoenas to the White House, Vice President Dick Cheney’s office and the Justice Department after what the panel’s chairman called “stonewalling of the worst kind” of efforts to investigate the National Security Agency’s policy of wiretapping without warrants. The move put Senate Democrats squarely on a course they had until now avoided, setting the stage for a showdown with the Bush administration over one of the most contentious issues arising from the White House’s campaign against terrorism.

Lebanon: Ready or Not PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 27 June 2007
Ready or Not The Hariri assassination was not, then, a “terrorist bombing,” as the Resolution repeatedly colours it. So why present it this way? June 2007 has seen too much bad news from Lebanon, all within a couple weeks of the UN Security Council adopting Resolution 1757 with the announcement that “Those who might be tempted to commit similar crimes would know there would be consequences,” and that establishing this tribunal “would act as a deterrent to those who would commit heinous acts.” In actuality, Lebanon makes even the most convoluted Tom Clancy novel of political intrigue look simplistic. The sad thing is the Security Council knows this full well.
