Saudi Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal to Build Hotel in Tel Aviv PDF Print E-mail

ImageSaudi Arabia is investing into Israel. Plans by Saudi Prince Al-Walid bin Talal to build an eight-story hotel in Tel Aviv together with the Abulafia family of Jaffa are in their early stages. But too much publicity could doom the project. Bin Talal - the world's eighth-wealthiest man and the wealthiest Arab, according to Forbes - is eyeing a beachfront property facing the Opera Building on Herbert Samuel Road to build a 150-room, Oriental-style hotel. Bin Talal's regular architect, London-based Basil al-Bayati, is said to be in charge of planning for the project.

ImageIt has been a year, by the Muslim calendar, since an attack on one of the Shiites most sacred shrines here shattered this ancient mosque, ripping a hole to the heavens in its once glorious dome. Now, it is a hulking shell of its former self, gnarled and twisted metal snaking around the crumbling concrete structure. The blue and gold tiles that adorned the facade of the Al Askariya Shrine, covered with graceful Arabic script from the Koran, are in tatters, the broken pieces still on the ground in the empty courtyard.

Hezbollah admits owning seized arms PDF Print E-mail

Hezbollah soildersHezbollah has acknowledged that a truck seized by the Lebanese authorities on Thursday was carrying munitions destined for its fighters and demanded the weapons be returned. The group said the authorities had confiscated a "truck carrying munitions to the resistance". Elias Murr, the Lebanese defence minister, rejected the Hezbollah demand, saying the weapons would be handed over to the under-equipped Lebanese army. The truck had been carrying the load from the Bekaa  Valley in the east to the south, the Shia group said in a statement.

ImageTony Blair has rejected claims that the UK is a "police state for Muslims" as "categorically wrong". But the prime minister's official spokesman said anyone arrested in a police state would not have been freed and allowed to appear on television. Abu Bakr, who was arrested, questioned and then released without charge over an alleged kidnap plot, made the remarks on BBC Two's Newsnight. He said: "It is a gross caricature of the political process in this country."

Muslim fury as Israelis dig near Islamic shrine PDF Print E-mail

ImageThe Arab world reacted with fury yesterday when Israeli archaeologists began exploratory work near one of the most important shrines in Islam, the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. The digging was ordered by Israel to improve access to the Mughrabi Gate, the only entrance into the al-Aqsa compound, used by non-Muslim visitors and tourists. While the mosque compound is regarded as the third most important site in Islam, for Jews it is the most important shrine. This has made it a friction point between the two faiths for decades.

ImageSupreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei here Thursday paid tribute to the Father of the Islamic Revolution, the late Imam Khomeini. On the eve of the annual `Ten-Day Dawn' celebrations marking the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the Supreme Leader renewed his allegiance to the ideals of the late Imam. He also visited the tombs of the late president Mohammad Ali Rajaei and prime minister Mohammad Javad Bahonar who were martyred in a terrorist bomb blast at the presidential office on August 30, 1981.

Millions of Shia Muslims Commemorate Ashura PDF Print E-mail

Tens of Millions of Shiite Muslim men and women, some beating their chests, marched through the streets of the Middle East on Tuesday to mark Ashoura. In Iraq, attacks in three towns killed at least 36 people taking part in the ceremony, which commemorates the 7th century death of the grandson of Islam's Prophet Muhammad. In Pakistan, an explosion next to a pre-dawn Ashoura procession provoked an outburst of shooting that left two Sunni Muslims dead in the western town of Hangu, police said. Nine police officers and four civilians were wounded in the attack.
