Olmert: Plan for Lebanon war made months in advance PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 08 March 2007
Image Ehud Olmert told the Winograd Commission that his decision to respond to the abduction of soldiers with a broad military operation was made as early as March 2006, four months before last summer's Lebanon war broke out. In his testimony, Olmert claimed he had held more meetings on the situation in Lebanon than any of his recent predecessors. The first meeting was held on January 8, 2006, four days after Olmert was called to take the place of Ariel Sharon, who had fallen into a coma. Further meetings were held in March, April, May and July, after Gilad Shalit was captured in the Gaza Strip.

The Final Punch: Removing Iran from the New Middle East Equation PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 24 February 2007
Image The configuration of the New Middle East — as envisaged by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during the Israeli war against Lebanon in July-August 2006, most certainly has no place for more than one regional power broker, namely Israel. Under such an arrangement — subservient Arabs and Iran governed by an all powerful Israel and supervised, even from afar by the seemingly philanthropic United States — would ensure Israel’s ‘security’, which has for long served as a casus belli, and supposed American interests in the region; regardless of what one thinks of such logic, in Washington, it is still prevailing. This means that the war of words between Teheran and Washington is mostly inspired by this redoubtable strategic chasm: where Washington strives to knock the Iran factor out of the regional equation, and Teheran pushes with all of its might to keep itself pertinent, indeed equally relevant to the shaping of the region’s future.

Iraqis protest arrest of Shiite Leader PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 24 February 2007
Image Iraqis took to the streets of Shi'ite towns and cities on Saturday to protest over the detention by US troops of the eldest son of Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, one of Iraq's most powerful Shi'ite leaders. There were no reports of violence. The US military said Ammar al-Hakim was held on Friday because members of his convoy were acting suspiciously at a border checkpoint while returning from Iran. SCIRI supporters held protests in Najaf, Kerbala, Basra, Kut and other towns in the mainly Shi'ite south of Iraq, witnesses and local media said. Ammar al-Hakim told reporters on Friday US troops said his passport had expired. He said the document was valid. The way I was arrested was disrespectful and not appropriate for a political and religious figure like me. They cuffed my hands and blindfolded my eyes. They raised their weapons against me" he said after his release.

A new element has made these squads more dangerous; recent reports have spoken of new recruits from former Ba’thists from Iraq.

ImageU.S. troops freed the eldest son of powerful Iraqi Shi'ite politician Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim on Friday after detaining him for several hours at a border checkpoint with Iran, Iraqi officials said. Ammar Hakim's convoy had been stopped at a checkpoint in Wasit province as he returned from Iran, Iraqi security sources and Shi'ite officials had said. It was not immediately clear why he had been detained. Amar al-Hakim, son of political leader Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, was taken into custody at a crossing point and was transferred to a U.S. facility in Kut, according to the elder al-Hakim's secretary, Jamal al-Sagheer. Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim is leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, the country's largest Shiite party with longtime ties to Iran. He met with President Bush at the White House in December, and his party is part of the Shiite alliance that includes Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
