Say No to AFRICOM PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 February 2008
ImageCloaked in "humanitarian" guise, the U.S. military's new Africa Command, or Africom, poses an imminent threat to self-determination on the continent. By grouping every country but Egypt under one military umbrella - as if they were already protectorates of the United States - the Pentagon telegraphs its intention to "secure" Africa's wealth for other people's purposes. Leaders of the Washington-based TransAfrica Forum warn that "misguided unilateral US military policy" has "led to inflamed local conflicts, destabilization of entire regions, billions of wasted dollars and the unnecessary deaths of US soldiers." Rather than accept a U.S.-imposed order, Africans should "develop Africa's own strong, effective and timely security capacities."

Gaza: The Tragedy PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 February 2008
ImageGaza is facing a new wave of crisis with the Israeli army again intensifying its blockade. This time in addition to military strikes, the Zionist regime has cut energy, fuel and power supplies to the Gazans. The aim of the Zionist regime is apparently aimed at destroying a million lives on the strip. The Hamas government is now in a dilemma: to accept truce with Israel or to be witness to the gradual annihilation of the people of Gaza. Therefore the main question remains: Were the Arab countries aware of Israel’s plan to strike Gaza? Some regional pundits believe that the plan to strike Gaza was finalized when US President George Bush gave the green light to the Zionist regime during his eight-day visit to the region last month.

Just a Headscarf? PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 February 2008
Just a Headscarf? On Saturday February 9, the Turkish Parliament approved two constitutional amendments easing the ban on women wearing Islamic headscarves in universities. Some 411 MPs out of a total of 550 voted in favor of a first amendment, which will insert a paragraph into Turkey’s constitution stating that everyone has the right to equal treatment from state institutions. The headscarves debate is a very emotional one in Turkey, often dividing “secularists” from traditional Muslims. Relaxation of the law banning Islamic headscarves in universities should be seen for what it is: a first modest step towards restoration of the basic rights of the majority of Turkish women who wish to observe the hijab.

Lavrov: Force on Iran "unacceptable" PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 February 2008
Lavrov: Force on Iran "unacceptable" Russia's foreign minister warns the West against using force to resolve Tehran's nuclear issue ahead of the new IAEA report's release. "I cannot imagine that anyone would like to resolve the problem over Iran's nuclear program by force. This is absolutely unacceptable," said Sergei Lavrov in an interview with Turkey's NTV news channel. He called on the international community to 'increase their efforts by three or four times to try to find a solution through negotiation.' “We can make fresh efforts to persuade Iran to sit at the table for discussions on the parameters of talks, if not for talks," he concluded.
