Muharram Message 2010

The AhlulBayt Islamic Mission (AIM) released its annual Muharram message in which it highlighted the importance of paying heed to the universal lessons of guidance contained in the eternal legacy of Imam Hussain (a). For followers of the path of the AhlulBayt (a), the crescent of the month of Muharram heralds a time of deep grief and sorrow. On the desolate plains of Karbala, one of the greatest epics of heroism and sincere servitude to the Almighty was etched with the blood of martyrs. Today, the heroes of Karbala – whose greatness Time itself has failed to limit or reduce – stand as lofty beacons and guiding posts for seekers of truth, justice and the way of the Prophets and Messengers.

which it highlighted the importance of paying heed to the universal lessons of
guidance contained in the eternal legacy of Imam Hussain (a).

———-

In His Name, the Most High;

“Peace be upon you, O Imam Hussain, and peace be upon those souls who
supported you in your mission. We send you our salutations for as long as we
live, and for as long as there is night and day."

For followers of the path of the AhlulBayt (a), the crescent of the month of
Muharram heralds a time of deep grief and sorrow. On the desolate plains of
Karbala, one of the greatest epics of heroism and sincere servitude to the
Almighty was etched with the blood of martyrs. Today, the heroes of Karbala –
whose greatness Time itself has failed to limit or reduce – stand as lofty
beacons and guiding posts for seekers of truth, justice and the way of the
Prophets and Messengers.

Faced with the choice of overlooking the fate of the Ummah in return for worldly
pleasures, the heroes of Karbala and at their helm, the Prince of Martyrs Imam
Hussain (a), chose principle over expedience, commitment over compromise and
preferred the path of martyrdom rather than silence amid the grave injustices
that had threatened to putrefy the very foundations of the faith. Imam Hussain’s
outright refusal to succumb to the vile diktats of power with his famous reply:
"Do you not see that truth is not being acted upon, and falsehood is not
being refrained from? Let the righteous believers desire to meet their Lord.
Certainly, I do not view death to be but prosperity, and life with oppressors as
nothing but disgrace"
, reverberates as an everlasting directive in the
hearts of his followers.

Yazid’s materialistic outlook and blind lust for power is not unlike the
prevalent greed and materialism that have turned the lives of millions into
despairing nightmares. With every passing year, the number of those stricken by
poverty and misery continues to multiply, whilst the gap between the meek and
the powerful widens with no respite. The monopolisation of wealth and factors of
distribution, just as during the era of Umayyads, has allowed for small powerful
elites to determine the fate of humanity. Truth and justice have naturally been
the first casualties of modern Yazidism. Unrestrained capitalism and the
concentration of wealth in the hands of a few have led to the monopolisation of
truth – The inverted reality we live in today where oppressors are acclaimed as
champions of virtue, whilst the voices of the oppressed are quashed and beaten
into silence, is the direct result of the overriding materialist outlook which
seeks to suffocate the higher, spiritual quality of human existence.

In the open-air prison of Gaza, untold suffering and oppression takes place on a
daily basis, while the oppressors continue to raise smokescreens with vain and
deceitful promises. Across the Muslim world, heads of state work hand in glove
with the imperialist project to multiply the shame and indigence of the Ummah.
In Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, innocents are tortured and their rights
devoured by tyrannical regimes who know no boundaries in their greed to hold on
to power. In Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq, millions continue to be added to
the growing list of victims thanks to the imperialist project, as well as a
misguided fanaticism masquerading in the garb of religion. Those valiant nations
and peoples who refuse to surrender to oppression, and instead choose to
confront the forces of imperialism, are made the principal targets of Satanic
plots, and no stone is left unturned in the bid to straiten their means.

Within this climate of rampant injustice and oppression, the collective
conscience of humanity is sedated and put to sleep by a blind materialism which
actively seeks to remove all mention of God and Divine values from society. The
agents of Yazid who misused religious slogans to justify unspeakable evils find
many rivals in the modern era who likewise exploit the deepest aspirations of
humanity in order to lead us to the brink of perdition. Despite these major
challenges however, we are witness to a Great Awakening – inspired by the
pristine teachings of the Final Messenger (s) and his Household (a) – aimed at
reviving the lost dignity of this Ummah.

Today, the responsibility to build our selves and characters, and the obligation
to identify righteous sources of guidance cannot be greater. As the month of
Muharram approaches, the followers of Imam Hussain (a) once again step up with
zeal and fervour to renew their allegiance to the eternal legacy of the heroes
of Karbala. With great honour and pride we raise the flag of the Prince of
Martyrs, and we pledge to spread his message as taught to us by Lady Zaynab (a)
who perfected the epic stand of Karbala in the court of Yazid.

From the plains of Karbala, we hear a clear call out to the Awaited Saviour,
Imam Al-Mahdi (atf), in whose hands the All Wise and All Powerful has gifted the
torch of guidance and the reigns of leadership. The heroes of Karbala await the
promised day on which falsehood and injustice will be effaced, and justice and
the rule of the Almighty prevail. May we also be included amongst the awaiting
ones.

Wa min Allah Al-Tawfiq.
