Course on Mantiq: Logic & its Modern Challenges

Logic has long stood at the heart of the Islamic intellectual tradition, providing the foundations for sound reasoning, examining arguments and distinguishing coherent thought from contradiction.

But what happens when the very foundations of logic are challenged?

How do we reason about God and the Divine? How should we respond when modern approaches to logic question the legitimacy of theological thought? Can we accept both a proposition and its contradiction?

Logic & Its Modern Challenges is an eight-week intensive course exploring the foundations of logical reasoning alongside some of the major intellectual challenges presented by modern thought.

From the classical tradition of Aristotelian and Muslim logic to Gödel and Carnap, and from the paradoxes of the ancient Sophists to contemporary debates surrounding contradiction, the course examines fundamental questions about how we think, reason and arrive at truth.

More than an abstract study of logic, this course aims to strengthen the intellectual foundations needed to engage seriously with Islamic thought and the intellectual challenges of the modern world.
